Whether Karen Klemp is dying cloth or using acrylic paints on board, her favorite studio is her backyard where she can hear the birds and the rushing of the water in her waterfall. The sounds and smells of her own outdoor home brings her such joy. It is that joy that she wishes to convey to the viewers of her work.

Artist Statement

Karen S. Klemp, born in 1949, has lived in Michigan most of her life. Her media varies from year-to-year. In 2024 Klemp focused on acrylic painting on board. In 2025 she is going back to an earlier love of batik, however, using the dyes, wax and raw silk in a more contemporary way.

Her favorite place to work is in her own backyard when weather permits. The sound of rushing water down her waterfall and birds playing in the bushes are her muse. Whether she is painting or dying, the sound and feel of water is ethereal to her.

The reason she does art and teaches workshops is condensed into one word: JOY. She feels like heaven is in her own backyard. She hopes to convey that to her viewers and participants in her workshops.
